Penguin Frenzy!

This post was originally from February 22, 2023

After days of visiting with friends we had a free afternoon to be tourist again. We went back to one of my favorite places in Cape Town – Boulders Beach – home to the African penguins. Boulders Beach is an inlet surrounded by granite boulders located in the Cape Peninsula near Simon’s Town (in Cape Town). Not only are there sandy white beaches to enjoy, but there are boardwalks that meander their way through the vegetation so you can get an amazing view of all the penguins. If you are into documentaries, I highly recommend Penguin Town on Netflix. It takes place right here in Simon’s Town where it follows different penguins around on their quest for love.

The last time I got to come to Boulders Beach was the day Liza and I got engaged. Although there were far more people to contend with than there were in the midst of Covid, I can’t get enough of watching nature at its best…and maybe worst. From the viewing area we were busy watching the penguins do their thing. All of a sudden we heard a great big gasp and everyone yelling ‘noooooooooo’. A preying seagull had swooped down and grabbed a penguin egg. Penguins don’t have many eggs so it is quite the tragedy when one is taken. After watchin Penguin Town and understanding the lengths that these penguins go to to produce their young, it only made it that much more tragic. Circle of life they say, right?!

We also got to see a bunch of dassies – also known as the rock hyrax. These little animals are native to Africa and the Middle East. Crazy enough they are the African elephant’s closest living relative, in spite of the size difference (due to the similarities in the structure of the feet and teeth).

Anyway, being back to Boulders Beach was such a treat and to commemorate it below is a photo of a lonely man in the ocean. We all know what he is up to right?!
